COBRA: A Research Accelerator for the Crustal Ocean Biosphere

چکیده

Abstract The deep seafloor covers two-thirds of Earth's surface area, but our understanding the ecosystems and resources found in ocean, as well ability deep-sea to withstand human perturbation, is limited. These habitats demand urgent study there are emergent uses form mining carbon sequestration that will fundamentally alter physical, chemical, biological conditions took millions years establish. We propose international network COBRA, a research accelerator for crustal ocean biosphere. COBRA bring together diverse stakeholders experts, including interdisciplinary academic government scientists, private institutions, policy makers, data systems engineers, industry others coordinate efforts generate new knowledge inform decision making about activities could affect and, by extension, all society. also train next generation leaders exploration, science, through an innovative virtual program carry this effort into future generations earth science research. policies relating industrial decrease likelihood serious harm environment, maintain ecosystem services benefit

Ecology of the rare microbial biosphere of the Arctic Ocean.

Understanding the role of microbes in the oceans has focused on taxa that occur in high abundance; yet most of the marine microbial diversity is largely determined by a long tail of low-abundance taxa. This rare biosphere may have a cosmopolitan distribution because of high dispersal and low loss rates, and possibly represents a source of phylotypes that become abundant when environmental condi...

The diel carbon cycle of the Biosphere 2 ocean

The purpose of this study was to find the dominant processes affecting the diel carbon cycle of the Biosphere 2 ocean from July 27, 1995 to August 14, 1995. Despite excessively low nitrate (B0.05 mmol l) and phosphate (0.00–0.04 mmol l) values, the Biosphere 2 ocean not only showed large daily TCO2 changes of 30.597.0 mmol kg but also a net production of organic carbon and CaCO3 during the peri...

Transporting Ocean Viromes: Invasion of the Aquatic Biosphere

Studies of marine viromes (viral metagenomes) have revealed that DNA viruses are highly diverse and exhibit biogeographic patterns. However, little is known about the diversity of RNA viruses, which are mostly composed of eukaryotic viruses, and their biogeographic patterns in the oceans. A growth in global commerce and maritime traffic may accelerate spread of diverse and non-cosmopolitan DNA ...

Accelerator mass spectrometry for biomedical research.

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is the most sensitive method for detecting and quantifying rare long-lived isotopes with high precision. In this chapter, we review the principles underlying AMS-based biomedical studies, focusing on important practical considerations and experimental procedures needed for the detection and quantitation of (14)C- and (3)H-labeled compounds in various experime...
